Tesco's commitment to clean energy 'may create many green collar jobs'

Supermarket chain Tesco has claimed that its commitment to the environment may create and safeguard thousands of green collar jobs in the UK.

The firm, which was founded in 1919 and now has a retail network across the UK and abroad, revealed it intends to spend over £100 million with green technology companies in Britain over the coming year, Reuters reports.

It is part of an attempt to halve its carbon emissions by 2020.

Speaking to Reuters, Tesco chief executive Terry Leahy said that businesses can play a key role in the battle against climate change.

However, he added: "It would have been better if there had been clear binding targets (set by governments) against which all businesses could set their own targets."

According to Mr Leahy, carbon emissions in all new stores in the 2010-11 financial year will be between 50 and 70 per cent lower than in its older premises.
