Eco homes strategy 'may lead to rise in green collar jobs'

The number of green collar jobs available in the UK may rise thanks to a new government strategy.

In a new development, the Labour administration has announced it is to pave the way for up to seven million households in the country to benefit from eco upgrades.

This would lead to the creation of approximately 65,000 positions in the green home industry, it claimed.

The plan is to be implemented in three stages, with the first being the insulation of six million homes by the end of 2011.

Following this, the insulation of all "practical lofts" and cavity walls with occur by 2015 and then up to seven million eco upgrades will have taken place by 2020.

Energy and climate secretary Ed Miliband - who was elected to his current role in October last year - said: "Making homes more energy efficient will help protect people from upward pressure on bills, tackle climate change and make us less reliant on imported energy."
