Could Ford proposals offer green manufacturing jobs boost?

A proposal by Ford could boost green manufacturing jobs.

The automotive giant is planning a £1.5 billion investment in the development of a new generation of environmentally friendly technology in the next five years.

With the investment backed by the government, Ford's commitment to the new technologies could see a rise in green manufacturing training and green manufacturing courses.

The car manufacturer has already indicated that the plans will safeguard 2,800 skilled jobs at its research and development centre and manufacturing plants across the UK.

Business secretary Lord Mandelson states: "Ford is a major investor in research and development in the UK. The government stands ready and willing to support these innovative research and development projects backed by a highly skilled workforce."

Speaking at the Geneva Motor Show, business minister Ian Jones recently indicated the need for UK manufacturers to focus on low-carbon technologies despite the tough time the automotive industry has been facing.
