Government to prioritise green training with microgeneration initiative

The government is to promote green training across the UK with a new strategy designed to encourage wider uptake of microgeneration technology.

Climate change minister Greg Barker has unveiled a new microgeneration strategy which will aim to encourage homeowners, organisations and communities to install their own renewable energy devices, such as solar panels and small wind turbines.

According to the initial consultation, staff in green jobs will play a key role in this, with the government set to focus on creating new positions and ensuring they are provided with the skills they need to help execute the strategy.

Mr Barker expressed confidence that the scheme will help to reduce emissions and "bring power back to the people" by creating sustainable energy economies.

He added: "Together we will create a marketplace for jobs and prosperity alongside products and advice which people trust."

This comes after climate change secretary Chris Huhne last week announced an overturning on the ban on local councils selling green electricity to the National Grid, in a further move to promote microgeneration.
