Government's backing of green jobs 'not encouraging'

The government has been criticised for its decision to abolish the Sustainable Development Commission (SDC), with green jobs creation potentially harmed as a result.

According to environment commentator Jonathon Porritt - who is a former chair of the SDC - the green agenda is not receiving encouraging signs from the government.

However, he pointed out that it is too early to be making a firm judgment on how successful the coalition is likely to be in this area.

"The government's justification for getting rid of the SDC is transparently vacuous, if not downright dishonest," he argued.

"This is an ideological decision, one driven by dogma, not by evidence-based, rational analysis."

When the government announced it was to drop the SDC, environment minister Caroline Spelman described it as part of the coalition's plans to be the greenest government ever.

She said she is determined to work with energy and climate change minister Chris Huhne to drive a sustainable agenda through the government.
