Vince Cable announces green jobs backing

Green jobs will be created as a result of a new government investment announced today (August 5th 2010) by Vince Cable.

The business secretary said the coalition is to provide a funding package worth £4.6m, to enable more than a dozen projects in the north-east of England to create green jobs.

This comes after the government has been criticised by organisations such as Friends of the Earth, which said the coalition has not done enough to move into a low-carbon economy.

"It's vital that any grants will garner real benefits for businesses and communities by growing local economies and skills," commented the Liberal Democrat MP.

He said he is delighted to announce the package of state investments, going on to add that the affected companies will be able to create green jobs in the future as a result.

Mr Cable's colleague Chris Huhne, the energy and climate change minister, has frequently stated that he wants to help companies to create green jobs.
