Clegg urges firms to focus on green jobs

Firms should place a focus on creating green jobs, the deputy prime minister has stated.

According to Liberal Democrat MP Nick Clegg, the government's planned Green Deal scheme will help with this as it will offer low-interest loans to companies interested in becoming more environmentally-aware.

Speaking at a north-east event, Mr Clegg stated that both households and businesses will benefit from the plans.

"This government is going to do things differently. We won't try and dazzle you with green gimmicks. We want to impress you by quietly getting on with the job," he said.

The deputy prime minister added that the scheme could unlock billions of pounds worth of investment from the private sector, which would create green jobs in the long-term.

Earlier this month, business secretary Vince Cable announced that the coalition is to provide a funding package worth £4.6 million to firms that want to create new green jobs.

The government had previously been criticised by organisations such as Friends of the Earth for its position on the environment.
