Offshore wind 'could support 200,000 UK green jobs'

The offshore wind energy sector could create more than 200,000 green jobs in the UK over the course of the next 40 years.
Figures from the renewable energy industry body RenewableUK reported in the Telegraph claim that this number could reach as high as 220,000 new opportunities, with the sector set for rapid expansion over the coming decades.
Benj Sykes, director of innovations at the Carbon Trust, told the news provider that the UK is well-placed to capitalise on the growth of the industry.
"With offshore wind there's a new generation of technology that's up for grabs," he said.
"I don't believe the Danes, Germans or Norwegians have any de facto lead here."
Mr Sykes added that the marine energy sector could also be set for a boom in the coming years, with as many as 17,000 green jobs to be created.
Recent figures from RenewableUK stated that there was a 91 per cent increase in full-time employment in green jobs between 2007/8 and 2009/10.
