A new Green Collar Training Centre opened in June 2010 at the premises of Building Futures East at Walker on the River Tyne. Attracting a private sector investment of around £250,000, the Centre specialises in providing people with relevant manufacturing skills. Nissan has been closely involved in the development of the Centre and its training curriculum, which employs a simulated manufacturing cell. The Company is keen to support world-class training in manufacturing within the local community.
The first wave of trainees has recently completed their course, with a high level of success. Our target is to help around 700 trainees over the next 12 months.
The intention is to adapt this training to meet the needs of the wind turbine manufacturing and maintenance industries. Giant new wind turbines will be made nearby, ready to tow out and install in the North Sea. This is a huge new employment opportunity for the Region, and our Green Collar Power Generation division will be playing an active role in meeting the demand for new skills and labour.
